I guess most countries have skeletons in their closets some more so than others. Some like Germany, Japan and South Africa have been forced as societies to accept, learn from and try to make ammends for the bad points in their history, we prefer to brush the bad stuff under the carpet and pretend it didn't happen.

I never said we were the only country with parts of their history to be achamed about, that wasn't the question. All the countries you named have serious amounts of blood on their hands, several on a much worse scale than the English

If the portrayal of history in this country was a bit more balanced, and instead of justifying our colonial period essentially as bringing civilisation to the savages, also taught about things like the fact the renaissance period was only made possible due to european scholars bringing knowledge back from the libraries of the middle east etc. basically that these coutries we were colonising also had great civilisations stretching back thousands of years, then it might help to increase the understanding and mutual respect between races in this country.

are you proud of all our history? even the bits you're ashamed about? IMO The statement 'I'm proud of our history', makes it look like you're proud of everything we've done, which is something that's likely to rightly piss people off who's ancestors were slaves, the victims of our ethnic cleansing campaigns etc

personally I'm proud of the good bits of our history and ashamed of the bad bits. If that makes me a wanker in your eyes, then I reckon I can live with it

Your closing statement that im white, 'im english and i am well fucking proud of our history' is exactly the sort of generalised statement that pisses people from other races off as it looks like you're saying you're proud of ALL of our history, when in reality there are bits of it that you're ashamed of.

If you can't understand this, think how it would look if a German said the same thing to a Jew - 'im German and i am well fucking proud of our history'. Do you think the Jew would be right in finding that statement offensive? even if what the German had meant was I'm proud of our history apart from the holocaust.

Thing is that you wouldn't find a German making that mistake unless they actually were facist scum as they've had decades of national soul searching about the Holocaust - us English on the otherhand still seem to think we've nowt to be ashamed of - or at least that's the impression we give when we make statements like the one you made.

We have no faith any more in trying to become a multicultural society, so when a stronger faith comes along such as Islam, It will only be a matter of time before that faith takes over the country which is what white people have done in history to black people.
