I'm working towards my chartership now, but more on the planning side of things (work in transport planning) rather than the hard engineering side, but I work for Jacobs which is mainly a civil engineering company so know plenty of civil engineers. The money and prospects are pretty good, though it really varies depending on what specialism you go into - just do a bit of research and you'll be fine. Transport specialists are on the "critical demand" list for the UK, and generally most countries around the world, so for me when I get chartership as a transport planner I should be able to move pretty much wherever I like
