The argument then is that you will cost more to the tax payer in terms of medical costs through the NHS (if you weren't killed outright).

What about other peoples freedom to enjoy a pint with stinking of smoke, having smoke in the eyes and generally inhaling smoke?

I can see your point about the helmet but there are plenty of people who would fall off their bike, smash their head in and then be ruined for life: surely protecting these citizens is better than them disabling themselves because they wanted to look cool?

Plus see my previous post re car pollution ;)

Brid you're completely overreacting to this, You need to get off your tiresome anti-red soap box ;)

The Medical Council have suggested the introduction but a few years ago they also suggested that passive smoking was a falacy.

but it was a total ban on smoking. even in places that were private clubs set up expressly for the purpose with staff who agreed to it. Thats what I mean about freedom going. the government has no right to tell me as an adult what I can and cannot do with my own body as long as I don't harm anyone else. If I choose not to wear a helmet its only MY head not anyone elses.
And the argument about the cost to the NHS is such a dangerous route to go down. Helmets for pedestrians when walking about outside? banning rock climbing? banning fat people?
Brid is right to say that people 50 years ago would be rioting in the streets if they were suddenly to get all the nanny laws we have now.

Innit, I agree with pretty much all of what forks said, opressive governments can go and fuck themselves and it riles me up no end, however I don't really think that banning smoking in pubs was such an opressive move, peoples freedom to good health is part and parcel of our freedoms - obviously second hand smoke has been proven to be dangerous, it's not as if your lungs breakdown all the toxic chemicals and exhale fresh air. Peoples right not to smoke is mutually exclusive with peoples right to smoke in the same room as them (I think, that phrase gets me every time though).

I also would be pro automatic donors, anybody who doesn't want themselves cut open when they are already dead is being fucking ridiculous. There is no logic in giving two shits about it at all.

Then you are refuting the decided criteria, not the initial idea, which I generally agree with.

All victimless crimes should be legalised, they shouldn't actually be illegal in the first place.

That you thought it would be "nice" to be involved in an organ transplant because it's like a little part of you lives on.
