    Completely illegal that.

Notice periods have to be EXACTLY the same on either side or they are breaking the law.

If anyone gets given notice like that, i'd recommend speaking to an employment solicitor ..... A colleage of mine was made redundant because his company didnt do things completely by the book when they got rid of him (His new boss just took a dislike to him), and he ended up getting 19k settlement.

EDS are useless fuckers like - I worked for them for all of 2 months before i got another job elsewhere. I gave them 2 weeks notice even though it was 'in my contract' that i had to give 4. My line manager who i never met until the week before i left said to me that the laws on giving notice were more for the EMPLOYEES protection and not the employer. In the end he said there was nothing they could do about me leaving when i felt like it and it would be pointless for them to even consider trying to chase me to get 2 weeks wages out of them that i wouldnt have worked.

I think they got round it by stating it as a "secondment", Kellys paid you, even though you worked in an EDS facility and by their rules and code of conduct. I'm not complaining - that place taught me a lot about employment rights, sticking up for myself, and showing some initiative :)

The irony? My current job at BT involves liasing with my former colleagues at EDS on the same government account...

The agency never used me again because the company rang them up and said I'd just walked out without notice even though I gave a week.

Sorry to hear that Jamie, im sure you'l find another job.

Recruitment agencies, no matter how shit the wage is they give you, or if they fuck you over, did you a favour in the first place by getting you a job. Anyone can turn that offer down if its that bad, and you chose to use them in the first place.
The only reason i dont like them, is because I like to find a job myself, and not have to rely on different jobs, that aren't likely to be permanent.

    RobBrown, your are a numpty.

For Paul or whoever. Just qualified as a Health and Safety Officer with a Quality Management Systems qualification in Internal Auditing to boot. Got practical safety qualifications such as Working in a Confined Space and Using Breathing Apparatus, plus a year working on a pipeline as a Health and Safety Representative and Quality Control Coordinator.

What are my chances of finding owt with those skills at the minute in the north east?

Is it the NEEBOSH general certificate you have mate?

EDIT: Just reading through that again you'd definitely not struggle to walk into a job in the North East.

Does anyone really care how much "someone's making on the back of them" just worry about your own take home pay.

I found Slavepower pro-active in getting me employed many years ago but now in my 30's I very much doubt I would ever work for one if possible but if they have the graft & I was out of work I would work for them............thats LIFE!!!!

I am off to listen to this

Canny depressing reading on the news each day about all these redundancies back home then having to come back, so thats cheered me up a bit. Ta! Aye, it basically is I think yeah, but its the Aussie version with Aussie standards (basically the same as British Standards). Would be willing to fork out cash to do the British version if the Aussie qualification isn't recognised, but I would guess it would be. After I did my main core safety modules, I specialised in construction safety as its the most difficult as the standards are more complex and detailed, but think they are interchangeable with industrial safety and services safety.

Couple of lads who I've done courses with are fucking off to Dubai to work, tempting.

Basic welders were on around 1400 quid a week (after tax) plus approx 350 quid a week living away from home allowance on the pipeline i was on. If you have a trade like that here you're sorted, but the credit crunch is just starting to effect oz.

Could stay here but it would mean forking out 10 grand to do a masters course. Mainly coming back as my lass wants to travel around europe and see england. Shes expecing this grand historical tour of newcastle and the north east. Bar beamish and a couple of castles it will be a case of "And heres the union rooms, they do cheap pints, and to your right is the bigg market..."

This Thread's went in a mad direction

The Lay off's are starting to get beyond a joke now - alot of my friends and some of my family have been made redundant over the past few weeks. it's really starting to get serious.

however, i think that if the media didnt have this covered constantly 24/7 in the TV news, Papers and internet - the panic wouldent have been so sudden, tbf - i think the media has alot of blame in the situation. not as much as the bankers and government (obv.)

as far as agencies are concerend, if you dont agree with them making money off the job they find you, dont fucking use them. get off your arse and find one your self (good luck with that in these panic stricken times). it's a pile of shite calling them robbers, mainly because you agree on wages and will be on contract. they tell you how much wodge your getting at the end of the day.

    Rob Brown you sponge.
