may be so but i still don't think that anyone will ever know the true effects till its too late.

I'm not a huge fan of tampering with nature, I'm just sceptical really as in science there are always a lot of positive points pushed forward to get something in motion, then the negatives are only really discussed as its underway or after something has gone wrong.

I studied genetics at uni and although i am for it in terms of putting more research work and money into it, unfortunately there are plenty people out there who are willing to misuse scientific developments.

So the concern is more about the psychology of the human race than the techniques of genetic manipulation itself.

how can humans be TOO inquisitive? it's our nature... it's how we evolved from monkeys and how we will eventually either 1) evolved further and leave this planet 2) kill ourselfs and the whole planet

Just because morally something is wrong - doesn't mean we shouldn't make ourselfs familiar with it - it's all about understanding.

i'm in favour, it's how the results and information gathered is then used....

like we don't even know that much about our own planet if you think about it, yet we're off looking at other places as you say to maybe even move to.

i definitely think it'd be beneficial to better ourselves if its possible to do it without devastating effects

but it is guaranteed that eugenics wouldn't result in one unique race sharing an identical genetic make-up... thats a far fetched fairy tail.

The Association of Human Genetic Polymorphisms with HIV Affections and The University of Washington recently discovered two chinese women with a genetic mutation that made them immune to AIDS.

While majority of the global population is susceptible to AIDS a mutation has occured in an unknown number of caucasians and monogloids (if you are to accept the existence of these races).. So to assume that these mutations would never happen if a future bug struck is far fetched... There would be the same probability of this happening.

And if such a bug did strike and no mutation occured, gentic modification and eugenics would provide the only platform to fight such a virus.

but to ban a science that could cure billions of people because you believe it was their fate to be born that way is a bit ignorant.

What are you basing this assumption on.... the human race has such a rich and diverse gene pool it seems strange to assume we'd all end up looking like brad pitt and angelina jolie... It would be safe to assume the majority of the population would carry their parents DNA.

your not a fan of tampering with nature?

I bet you use birth control, I bet you seek medical help when something goes wrong, I bet you cut your hair...

man is forever tampering with nature.

It all sounds like an accident waiting to happen.

We as humans and creatures of this planet have evolved over millions of years to a point were we now have a choice of controlling things like berth defects and eradicating diseases .. my question would be wouldnt this perhaps change our next step in evolution ? or are we creating the x-men here ?

If so bagsie magneto ! (sp) :D

i agree with everything that is being said, i'm just trying to give other arguments

i know its not going to make us all a genetically equal race etc

i was waiting for this comment

yes yes i know this i mean with genetics and things, i think its amazing and fascinating but i also think that the human body is such a complex thinig that how can we possible know that doing one thing won't affect something we don't even know about yet.

the next step? you talk like it's all pre-determined, like fate or controlled by something...

it's not fate - it's accident. survival of the strongest/fittest.....

a billion different outcomes for every possible situation...
