Old news but here it is for those that did not know: Utopian Leisure, the company set up by former Ultimate Leisure boss Bob Senior, has acquired nightclub company Tokyo Industries for an undisclosed sum. The deal means that Utopian picks up the three freehold Tokyo sites in Huddersfield, Oldham and Newcastle, and a 1,500-capacity Digital nightclub in Newcastle. Tokyo Industries founders Aaron Mellor and Rob Cameron will continue to operate the venues in a new Utopian subsidiary called Utopian Three. Senior said: "Aaron and Rob have specialist dance market credibility, whereas we are more mainstream operators. I see this deal as a merger of abilities." Senior first worked with Mellor 14 years ago when Mellor ran student nights at venues operated by the Utopian boss. Utopian has also set up a food division called Utopian Two after acquiring Milano's Italian restaurant in Belfast in partnership with local rest-aurateur Eddie Fung. The leasehold venue is to be refurbished and reopened serving Asian food. The clutch of deals means that Utopian is expecting to have a turnover of around £15m in a year's time - Tokyo Industries has a turnover of around £7m. Utopian has previously taken the lease on a 22,000sq ft venue in Belfast's Odyssey complex, previously run without much success as the Precious and Refinery nightclub. Senior opened a nightclub, Bambu Beach, in the same complex during his days at Ultimate. The new Belfast site is expected to reopen at the end of November and will be called Loveshack. Senior set up Utopian last September with former Ultimate development director Tim Wynn. The company has a £100m debt facility. http://www.morningadvertiser.co.uk/news_detail.aspx?articleid=18464
Shock horror ehh, Digital is in fact owned by smart businessmen, you were right melt we should have guessed.
u speak a lot fo sense then there you go - is it the night itself you dislike OR Hard dance as a genre? i'm not a fan of hard dance/house/whatever - but i love the atmosphere and (most) of the punters that go to Detox
What that he has quoted me*? Or has he has asked you to do IP check? *= I cant remember saying that but will take the credit for it as it sounds good.
to be fair it makes digital no worse than any of the other large clubs out there, it certainly doesn't make them a ghastly corporation. People invest lots of money in these places and expect a profit from them, there's nothing sinister in that. Look at any other pub/bar or similar business opportunity. Its just a way of life, nothing sinister about it. Just out of comparison melt, I'd imagine you make more than enough to cover your costs at detox and probably make a decent profit on the top. If you do, you're a good promoter and business man, if you don't, then I'd imagine you have a day job that pays well and detox is just for fun there's nothing sinister in that either! I know that enjoyment is a large part of it, people go to nights to enjoy themselves and DJs go there to enjoy playing to people, but at the same time enjoyment doesn't pay the bills or put food on the table.
you said it to me in 2004 when I had like 6 aliases man of seance was me fave when the delete post button used to work
I don't know the insides and outs, i just meant it's no real surprise digital was owned by a larger commercial company lol what happened there then?
allegedly they became so successful they floated on stock market as a plc think it was ul their plans didnt match those of the board and there was a mutual parting of waves in common speak I think you call it "sacking"
I haven't been and I wouldn't go so fair point. I don't like that sort of music... I don't really like Digital very much to be honest, but think it's ok, a reasonable venue. What makes me laugh is that without it there would be no commercial venue and then people like Monobrow (I'm guessing that's not your real name and hence an alias too?) would have no establishment to get all anti-establishment about...
people who dont go to detox assuming they dont like the music whatever next can someone remind me who played hard house at the last detox???
Is it full of a mixture of kids and people that live in student houses in Fenham but are 10 years too old to live in them?
clearly as i said earlier an alias you are my friend lets just say the youngest punter is 18 and the oldest is 57ish last time i looked 99% of the crowd didnt live in funham. you cant sustain a night with only the people / stereotypes you talk of
although, i probably am 10 years too old. Overall - i've been to 2 Christmas parties i've been to this year = 2 i've been sick at and 2 i've made an arse of myself at
don't worry about it! I've been to 1 christmas party with much the same result! and I'm much younger than you are..
