    Its an accepted fact that athletes and bodybuilders need extra protein.... up to 1 gram per pound of bodyweight per day.

    Fair enough if you sit about all day doing nothing, your body doesnt need any extra protein and it will be metabolised just like any other nutrient (fat / protein)....

    But for those who do its essential.... muscle is made from protein, and you supplement with protein to build it up.

    i'm not saying you don't need a lot of protein, cos you do, its just that a lot of the people who take supps already cater their diet for their sport, and will be eating high amounts of protein anyway, and this is usually enough to provide the body with adaquate protein to stop muscle fibre catabolism.

    most research has pointed to the required amount being in the 1.5-2g pkgbw - up to about 2.5g for strength athletes... but again the vast majority of nutritionalists advise that this can be obtained thru a balanced diet.
