firefighters on strike!

The Fire Brigade is more than willing to pay them. It is more to do with how MPs and Councils pass the charges onto US.

Anyone up for:
Income tax increase?
Council tax increase?
or a new Blair stealth tax ?

So whats the preferred method then? They cant negotiate, a firm offer has not been made and the people they are asked to negotiate cant be trusted. On BBC Radio 5 a couple of weeks ago, a government minister said that the dispute should be resolved via independent commission. When questioned whether the government would implement everything that the commission recommended he answered yes. When asked if the government would implement a 40% pay rise if the independent commission recommended it, he refused to answer the question.

The fire brigade has a massive recruitment-retention problem, particularly in the south east because of workload, risk of life, cost of living and the fact that the wage they are paid does not reflect this. The money they spend on replacement recruiting could be re-directed to wages and no doubt could cover a huge chunk of the bill. Especially when you consider it costs £2000 on average to replace an office worker and it therefore figures that training a firefighter must cost this numerous times over.

3 people died yesterday yeh.... but maybe the same ammount wud of died if the firefighters were not on strike....


also... does anyone know if they are getting paid suring this strike?.. i hopes not..

There are thousands of people who really want to be fireman. No doubt attracted by the excellent pay on offer. Only 1 in 30 applicants actually become one.

But somehow they want 40% more. If we give them it, then everyone else in the public sector strikes cos they want 40% more too. So other services go into total chaos too. Then we give them there 40% rise.

So hands up everyone who wants to pay 40% more council tax to cover all these extra wages for no extra benefits.

we had just watched the firemen walk out on the news last night and we got a knock on the door saying that 2 doors down was on fire....which is worrying cause its terraces and there is no way of getting the guy im working for out of the house....firemen came anyway but was quite a worry!

Maybe if the firefighters had been kept inline with other public sectors they wouldn’t be asking for a 40% rise to bring them back inline?

I don’t think teachers are that well paid either, maybe they shud go on strike again.

First the fireman,

Nurses, doctors, teachers, policeman.... the list is endless. Public service is open to strikes.

You can't win.

1. The government are too tight and afraid of change to actually make something happen urgently (Oh except to brown nose *cough*)

2. The financing and pay structure of such public services are diabolical. If they were anywhere near stable and reliable we would not be in the state we are.

3. Too much attention is being to items outside of the UK. The government is in place to develop/strengthen/support and give to the public of the UK. We are lucky in many ways as to what we have available (a lot people don't recognise as it is all day to day stuff). However, this does not make up for all the inadequacies which exist. Corruption and ignorance causes weakness. Who can guess why we are so weak.

Such discussions involving politics can rarely if ever be concluded. So many views, so many opinions and so many contributing factors can cause some key pieces to become drowned out or masked as irrelevant.

I support the need for rise in pay for public staff. Maybe parliament members could cut down on the caviar and the whiskey. Maybe they could cut down on first class pointless travel. The list is endless to cut costs. Why don't they consider having financial advisors and analysts.... it is their job to spot waste.

There truly is too much to speak of and discuss.

I don't agree with how the firemen are going about this cause. As for deaths. Fires can cause death even with a full fleet of firemen out trying to save lives. As several have mentioned statistics are required - don't forget these statistics have little to nothing to be compared too (one 48 hour strike) Making it worthless.

Good luck to the firemen, just next time, rethink your methods.... civil actions make for civil conclusions. Why argue with the core of UK Power? They'll give you one thing and just take it back in other ways.

Professional??? don't make me laugh!"!! any thick fuk could be a fireman and I know a few who are. For a professional job you should need professional qualifications!!! You don't need ANY QUALIFS to become a fireman & I doubt any of these "Professionals" have a degree!

40 people apply for every single fireman job advertised........ strange for such a poorly paid job isn't it???

As for dangerous......... more farmers & factory workers die than fireman a year.

It isn't bending the truth as much as it is that they're concentrating on these fires more bcos of the strike.

The television have hyped this up so much no wonder they think that they can get a full 40% rise. they would have been happy with a 16 % rise then something else to work progressively over the years!!! However, I would like to hear the opinion of your average 35 year old firefighter living in london with two chilren and a wife to support. With the cost of living down south he will probably be living in your average sized council house with no life whatsoever. To live in london these days everyone needs to be earning at LEAST thirty thousand pounds per year.

If you ask me it is again like the army, simply danger money. No matter what you say the firefighters are working silly hours to cover our stupidity or accidents whichever the case.
If you ask me about nurses, well they are over rated customer service advisors, however they do hold a great deal of medical information in their heads although is it such a hard job?

Fair enough firefighters get to have a lie down on late shifts but then again so do nurses. If you dont want to be a nurse. Go and get another job. If you dont want to be a firefighter then go and get another job. WHY CANT THE GOVERNMENT PRINT THEMSELF A NICE WAD OF CASH OFF TO BRING THE WHOLE SYSTEM UP TO DATE WITH AMERICA OR JAPAN>?
