I love having this done. :D Not been for a while, but used to need it doing quite regularly. My doctors have always been alright, but someone I know rang up to book an appointment with the nurse and was told the doctor would need to see them first to check it was wax and not another problem.

Definitely do the olive oil thing, either for 4-5 days (just morning/night) or the 24hrs that Allie said if that works. :D It feels lush like. The only time it hurt me was when I had a pretty bad infection at the same time, that was a nightmare. :(

Last time I had it done, when the nurse finished I suddenly realised the window was open and a train was going by (my doctors is right by the Newcastle-Edinburgh line), which was when I realised how bad my hearing had been. :D

I have needed to get it done a couple of times as 1 ear or the other completely blocks and it feels like you are half under-water. The best thing is to use olive oil and lie on you side with it in your ear for about 10 mins or so. Do it once or twice a day in each ear for aboout 5 days before your appointment. The syringing sensation is weird coz its warm water rushing into your ear but it feels alright. The last time I went the nurse was snotty with me, saying that I shouldn't need to have them done at my age.

haha thats a bit harsh, way to make you feel old!

i had my ears checked by an audioligist last week and he just dived in with a little metal hook and scooped a lump out. was done in less than 10 seconds but it fucking hurt like ( would of much preferred some nice warm water!

the thing with olive oil is that it has absolutely no medicinal properties, it simply softens the wax in your ear canal which, in your case, will have pushed against the tympanic membrane, preventing it from vibrating.
if you put olive oil in your ear for a set period of time each day for a number of days, you're only softening the wax, allowing it to harden, then softening it again. 24 hours, sometimes less, of constant olive oil treatment should make it come straight out.

the first time i had it done was the day we had jon o'bir at twisted logic. i woke up in the morning unable to hear a thing in one ear. went straight to the doctors', he made me an appointment with the nurse in the afternoon and told me to sit with olive oil in at all day. came out just fine...

One of my ears is muffled & has slight ringing in it. The 1st & 2nd time it sorted it self out after few hours of waking up with muffled hearing but 2 weeks on & my hearing out of that ear had dramatically been reduced.

Dr. Allie: Have I got to go via my GP (A GERMAN!!!) to get to a Eye,nose & ear Dr/nurse?

sounds like they've just gradually got more blocked mate, should be able to be sorted in the manner i mentioned earlier.

and more importantly, spence, were you knocking about the pink triangle last friday? i was scooting between crispy and camp david and am sure i walked past you stumbling about outside one of the left-handed boozers.

Has the syringing improved your hearing at all?

From reading bits & bobs on the net I think I may have a water build up but then I convince myself I have whatever I read last on Yahoo answers.

Well my appointment is tomorrow so im sitting here with bog roll sticking out of my ears and a syringe of olive oil in a cup in front of me which i keep using to 'top up'.

This feels ace. I dunno why i never got around to doing this recreationally, and not just when my hearing started to go.

    Viva good health¬!

The people with rininging ears, can I ask do you drink a lot of Diet Coke-Cola/Diet Pepsi/Zero/Max? As I continue my research it seems that the Aspartme (AKA:NutraSweet, Equal & Spoonful) in the drinks can bring on tinnitus.
