Good places to go camping? (within a couple of hours drive)

Yeah, bouldering. Looks pretty good, but nothing you wouldn't find at Sunderland.. and they have a huge 23m high wall too. Eldon Leisure have the Berghaus wall but it's fixed routes and it's a bit rough on the hands.

You can get to Keswick/Lakes in 2 hrs.

Much better than anywhere else in the England.

we go every year to somewhere called 'stonewraith' its about 5 mins from keswick.
Is in a valley with a huge stream running through it, loads of mountains, and loads of great walks.

The bloke who owns the land lives miles a away so u can make as much noise as you want

Think its about £2 a night.

I just phoned Finchdale and was told they don't allow camping having trouble finding info for the other places.

really? hhmm... it was a good few years ago we went camping in finchale - even my mate took his wife and kids 1 weekend. they must have stopped it.

I normally go camping in Seathwaite down the road from there, great place Borrowdale, another good campsite around there is just next to Grange.

I would only recommend Seathwaite if you are planning on walking Scafell as its the best route up there via Green/Great Gable and Styheads Pass.

Stonethwaite is very family oriented tho, with normally lots of kids, same with Grange.

Will be going to Grange as the river there is awesome .

Coincidentally, the Fichdale one gave me the number for grange and when I asked about camping they told me they're not opening until the land is dry.. probably after easter. That doesn't help us as we want to go this weekend

Goto Seathwaite then, it's open all year round but you do share your field with sheep, just pitch up and the farmer will come along at the end of the day, it is in the middle of no where.

Also you can take a walk to Black Moss Pot if you fancy a bit of a jump?

That looks class Is there a website or contact info? We'd like to know that the place we're going to has decent enough conditions and that whoever is in charge is ok with us being there. We're taking 3 decent cars with us though, so I don't know if we'd want to leave them parked out of view. Is that the only choice with Seathwaite?

I personally would much prefer camping somewhere that isn't a designated camp site, cos you can do what you like there and just clean up all your mess afterwards, instead of constantly being reminded to keep the noise down etc etc. I've never been to Keswick so it would all be a new mission for me

We go to pooley bridge every year and stay at a camp site right on the lake called waterside. Absolutely gorgeous there. And really nice free toilet/shower facilities.
they don't tend to let all male/ all female groups stay though

At Seathwaite you are basically in a farmers field, you can take your cars on to the field if they fit through the stone arch, my Dad scratched a company car ages ago while trying to fit it through.

Tbh in Keswick or any where in the Lake you will not find a place to go wild, most of the area is farmland and as such pitching your tents anywhere may cause a problem.

Seathwaite is normally a place most of the walkers goto as its right in the middle of no where and at the foot of some of the best walks in the lakes.

You could try any of the main campsites around Keswick as Seathwaite,Stonethwaite and Grange are all South of Derwent water which means for any decent pub trips its about a 20-30min drive in to Keswick.

If you really wanted out of the way you can camp at the summit on Skiddaw?

We were gonna goto Planky Mill today.. and one group of us is already there.... to be told the camp site is closed.


Are there any earby alternatives? The driver needs to get back to Newcastle ASAP to give someone a lift elsewhere before coming back.
