    Oh dear.

Whos trying to say that protein is the main agent in recovery?

Your average diet clearly does not have enough protein. If it did, there would not be so much discussion on bulking diets.

When eating for mass, the reccomended protein intake is 1-1.5g's protein per pound of bodyweight per day. You do NOT get that from an average diet.

This means eating plenty of good food in each meal, getting the blanace of protein/carbs/fats right.

I actually can't believe you can spend 5 years studying and then claim that carbs are the main way to get big. You need both, simple as that. As already said, protein is the main ingredient in muscle synthesis.

As for the supplement argument, I think it's quite ignorant to make a claim that all supplements are a waste of money. Many are, but some aren't. And trying to force your view onto someone when they are saying it's worked for them is just lame. Yes so there is clearly going to be a psychological element - but if the end result is reaching your goal...what does it matter? Supplementing with protein helps get the amount you take in up...and thats far from pointless.

And did someone say that protein was the main ingredient in recovery??

"the people you train with are obviously elite athletes" << what the hell is that all about  Yeah cos they just get big by magic

Find me some proof to the contrary then.

That was definitely a contender for the most condescending post ever award.

what are you on about? when you train your levels of protein drop, getting that back into your system straight after training is very very important, as is stuff like saturating your muscles with creatine again, i agree with some of the rest of the stuff you've put, but most people know the most important time to take protein supplements is post training as this is when your body needs it most.

I love how everyone has their own little twist, yet none of us can prove anything over the net just argue and argue

No I'm a figment of your imagination.

Find me some genuine studies that haven't returned inconclusive results after re-trial, other than those commissioned by the companies that sell supplements.

To be honest I was done with this arguement/discussion and willing to accept both sides but then you stepped up with your all knowing might.

No mate, like I said what works for you works for you. It may be the case that the supplements are having a physical effect on you, it might not, but either way they're helping with your training at the very least on a pschological level.

I was just offering my point of view/belief which I feel is based on a very solid background, that on the whole supplements are a waste of time.

CARBS are used up the most during a workout mate, because the glycogen gets totally abused during your workout. You need to ensure that you get carbs in your post workout shake to get the glycogen levels back up again.

Additionally, this can also spike insulin levels...insulin being one of the most anabolic substances there is...

The protein is in your shake to get the muscle synthesis back up and running again - so again, you need to get plenty of carbs AND protein (about 2:1 carbs:protein)

oh ps peter i'm on your side here.

    gym over paper i say!

I'm not trying to be all knowing, i'm just saying that claiming all supplements don't work simply isn't true
