Radio waves etc are not compression waves, but are what most people would recognise as a usual wave shape. They are a form of energy, not particles as most people understand them (ie they don't contain physical matter - atoms etc). A radio wave is not a sound wave, but may be converted into sound by the right equipment, such as a radio with a speaker (which converts electrical energy into sound by vibrating the speaker drum, thus forming compression waves).

This is like being back in Physics lessons!

Looks like I have managed to bore everyone senseless - myself included! Haven't thought about stuff like this for years.

nope, it just displaces some molecules.

anyone heard the schrodlingers cat thing.... something to do with putting a cat in a box and u have to prove wether the cat is alive or dead without opening the box.

I feel sorry for the cat :(

Yeah cause it's the compression of the molecules that produce the waves innit and you need something that can translate those waves into sound, thats where ur ear comes in :D

I hope that right cause it sounds good :p

Erwin Schrödinger and Paul Dirac formed the basis of Quantum Mechanics, based on the uncertainty principle.

Schrödinger’s cat is a famous illustration, well famous in quantum physics anyway, of the principle in quantum theory of superposition, proposed by Erwin Schrödinger in 1935. Schrödinger’s cat serves to demonstrate the apparent conflict, between what quantum theory tells us is true about the nature and behaviour of matter on the microscopic level, and what we observe to be true about the nature and behaviour of matter on the macroscopic level. Still with me?

First, we take a living cat, here Tiddles, and place Tiddles in a thick lead box. At this stage, there is no question that the cat is alive. Purr purr! Next, let’s throw in a vial of cyanide and seal the box. You do have a spare vial of cyanide lying about the house, don’t you? In theory, we don’t know if Tiddles is alive or if it has broken the cyanide capsule and died. Awww, I taught I taw a puddy tat! Since we do not know, the cat is both dead and alive, according to quantum law, in a superposition of states. It is only when we break open the box and learn the condition of the cat that the superposition is lost, and the cat becomes one or the other (dead or alive).

Erwin had too much wanking time as a child, maybe?

But isn't light photons and don't they have a very very small mass?

Mass can travel through a vacuum though!

Anyway, it's five o'clock on a Friday and I'm buggered if I'm going to be thinking about Physics any more!

Therefore if it is a mass travelling through a vacuum then it isn't a wave it is a particle stream.

But light travels in waves! Anyway, as I said before, that's enough physics for me for today. I was only trying to help clarify the sound thing in the first place!

No-one has actually decided whether light is a wave or particles the scientific comunity are split 50/50 on it.

    hmmmmm vero interesato

I always thought it was particles but then again I thought butter was just margarine in a packet :p :D

    OOOOO Chemistry is mean

Can we not do a good subject like D&T

Just sand some wood all day and go on the internet :p - and they have to say the education system is failing young people. What a cheek :D
