Whilst we're on the topic of language in threads can i make a plea to Alex ..... Please please please stop referring to things as Aids, it's just wrong and makes me feel

(I realise you'll prob do it more now i've said that, but it was worth a try!! :p )

too much emphasing on swearing now, there's no need for it in every line, when you're talking it can slip out, but not typing.

i think brid's right that the few decent threads vanish under a mound of shit and the people who might have something decent to say, look at the first page - then give in as they feel it's not worth it.

Can this board be saved? ultimately no, so maybe this trend is irreversible.

and decent threads aren't always politics - far from it

I'd say they were already massively overused.

The thing about the web is that the words on the screen are static, unlike speech which comes and goes instantly.

You can swear in real life and it might have an effect at the time but you can choose not to swear from that point on and completely change how something you say comes across.

The difference with the net is that when you have a forum front page open and you have a list of topics that people look at - it instantly changes the tone of the board that is presented to every person that comes across it... when theres so much profanity spread around all over the place. You could have 10 topics about serious matters ... but if there are three topics in there with "Some C*nt stepped on my foot", "I hate those f*cking immigrant c*nts" - the person reading the board makes a millisecond judgement about whether or not they want to post.

Thats why im against open swearing in topics, usernames and having too much of it in a discussion.

    Completely disagree...

... since the number of crap topics have went up - the number of people posting genuinely insteresting things has plummeted.

There might be the odd few who post anyway, but its a far cry from a few years back.

    Couldn't agree more.

I know we don't want to create hundreds of forums but would it be possible to create a News / Politics / Current Affairs forum.

I've no problem with the 'banter' but as Brid etc have mentioned the serious posts tend to get smothered in what some view as pointless threads. If there was a seperate 'serious' forum it would give those who want a more intellectual debate an opportunity to do so whilst keeping the 'banter' forum for the more colloquial posts. Everyone's happy!!

    Mods - sort it out!!!
