ok but you dont have to socialise in a place that sells alcohol if you dont want to be in a drinking environment

if you go to a bar to socialise you are usually having a drink in most cases

as a business, a bar is there to sell alcohol, which its customers buy!

regardless im sure you see my point.

I see your point but I would say the main purpose was to socialise ;) hence most people going with somebody not by themselves

they won't ban alcohol as its optional in a bar to buy it or not. whereas if people smoke its not optional to breathe it in or not.

can wait to come out of a club and not feel like ive smoked about 10 fags through second hand pap!

    :D

(or i can only remember nicking one!)

To be quite honest, its good that smoking is finally being cracked down on, because ... lets be honest - its going to kill you ....

BUT...... and heres the big but....

This current wave of "pragmatic government policy" depending on how the wind is blowing that day, be it banning cigarettes, foxhunting, introducing ID cards or enforcing a brussels rule on banana's that are too bendy, or the denial of a jury in a trial because hiring one that day might be too expensive, or locking away anyone we please on 'anti terror laws', is a worrying trend, and stinks like a gradual erosion of civil liberties

The country is fast becoming something out of 'Demolition Man' before Sly Stallone rolls into town and reminds us that life isnt about living a bubble. (yeah - thats a joke)

Where is the government going to find the 5 billion pounds it makes from cigarette duty that it will lose even after it pays to care for smoking related diseases in smokers.... perhaps people will get taxed for being in a bad mood that day, or maybe tax us on sunny days.

A bit of scepticism is needed methinks.

They can start by saving the 2.4 billion wasted each year by people going to the A and E when there is no need for them to be there.

I'll be glad to go out and not come back stinking of smoke. I'll come back stinking of beer instead.
There is a lot more to this than just secondary smoke. The real reason it's banned is because of a 30 year campaign to stop people doing it. The secondary smoke thing is just a *smoke screen*
you've a lot more chance of dying from deisel smoke than cig smoke

There is a whole pile of people who don't want any drugs in society at all and they will use whatever means they can to ban them
In America it's already starting to be socially unaceptable to drink alcohol.
We lose our freedoms so easily and getting them back is impossible

    whats this?

it's been estimated the cost of smoking related illness to the NHS is 1.5 billion - any idea what tax is made from cigs? a lot more i can guess

Bans never really work ... look at Prohibition in America ..... it just exacerbates 'underground' activity. I assume that America won't try and go down that route again. But then again, America is not know for it's common sense .........

doubt it... the workers will complain behind the bar and then you'll get dogooders join up and moan about it just to up hold the law
