8 billion last year in tabacco tax - 5 times what was spent on smoking related illness. http://www.ashscotland.org.uk/ash/a...tID=4433&p_applic=CCC&p_service=Content.show&

so what about alcohol related illness?

i'm saying - the reason that "it's for our own health" is complete bullshit.

in italy, which is often a lot colder in winter than the UK, a lot of bars got round it by extending and creating outside areas with high powered heaters etc. to accomodate smokers, everyone just moved outside... I doubt many places will take such steps here though?

    why not?

grouping smoking and drinking is plain ridiculous?

well ban tabacco sales in the UK!

and as for drinking, its like smoking - it all come down to how u do it. 40 malboro a day isn't the same as a couple of silkcut every week - same as 2 or 3 glasses of wine a week isn't like 10 pints a day - although i accept you'd have to drink a lot more in relation to smoking to get similar health issues - however the problem is still there

i dont see what is wrong with people having thier own choice over thier health, or having completely separate areas for smokers and non smokers. I am a smoker, and I would never smoke in a restaurant where thefre are others eating and that its disgusting, and I hate it when im eating.

If i want to fuck my health up let me do it in a separate area, dont make me go outside in the freezing cold and rain just to suck in a lungful of death - thats just cruel

why? the ban is simply shifting the option of choice from those that do smoke (the minority) who are scientifically proven to be killing themselves, to those who don't smoke (the majority) who now have a equal right to sit in public areas and not expect to breathe in a noxious fumes..

your choice to smoke isn't affected, but the health of the majority is increased..

driking is nothing like smoking? the ban is to prevent passive smoking in public areas? therefore it is precisely for the benefit of the nations health?

Dedicated smoking rooms are a place where the dregs of society meet.

I can't picture Jambon in there with his stripey black and white polo neck on and Malboros.

Most of my friends who smoke would like to quit.

This is a big step in the right direction, as the people who've tried only give in after their 4th drink as everyone else is sparking up and the smell of burning tobacco is unavoidable.

I think this is a good move for my friends.
