This little discussion always comes round every couple of months doesn't it, Joe's fault this time I suppose!!

As Lee has just said before 'How often do you see a play list with White lable ‘Unknown’ on it? All the time, the big DJ’s hide the big tunes as much as the next DJ', this is very true. It's only because we have so much contact, etc with Lee that this is such an issue.

What would people rather do? Lee stop producing the free cd's that he does so that people do not get upset about not knowing every tune, I think not.

Allie I understand all your points to be fair, but it comes down to personal choice at the end of the day, and we just have to respect Lee's approach to this.

Even better I'll give you an examples as people react better to facts over my biased opinions

In the early days of hip hop, DJ's done exactly what you do (as I'm sure you know) they sourced unusual breaks and mixed them, this elevated party dj's like Kool Herc, Africa Bambaata, Grand Wiz Theo, Grand Mast, Flash to god like status in NY, however hip hop never rerally spread futher than NY... Keeping their record box secret certainly done wonders for the said dj's reputation/status.... However it seriously hindered the growth of the music form as only select few could perform it at a select few parties.

It wasn't until universally recognisable tunes/standards started to be produced that the genre was recognised (rappers delight, adventure on the wheels of steel, rapture, etc.).

If people don't share music how can they discover what they enjoy? I think its an extremely selfish when you keep something that was designed for every1 too yourself, now I do know your doing a great job of pleasing them for 2 hours, but you've no right to deny them knowledge that doesn't belong to you (specially when its for your pown financial benefit).. Why can't they listen to it in their bedroom - why should you have exclusivity?

The genre would stagnate, of course it wouldn't disappear - but only a select few dj's would get the gigs (as happened in the bronx) and would be extremely hard for new talent to break the market... I honestly don't think music should be seen as a business and more pirvey dj's certainly shouldn't hold monopolys on who platys where

Now I can fully understand why you do it as this isn't an ideal world and you do need an edge to get gigs

A good example that does not quite fit the current scenario. With todays home studio technology and the Internet, electronic music proliferates at an exponential rate.

My lack of tracklistings does nothing to abate this flow.

The biggest medium for introducing people to new tunes is first word of mouth, then music sales, then clubs, then I guess the media...

The trouble with being a bedroom producer is you don't get the exposure - theres a gozillion trance producers sat around with maybe a couple of records pressed and a website... However this aint enough for them to make a living out of it

By you not giving away who they are how are you helping their career?

Most producers place versions of their tracks on sites just for that reason.

Music passes around the world in minutes thanks to the MP3 file format.

The internet is definitly the place to find new trance. @ word of mouth. especially with producers like thomas Datt, Hakk, john O'Calahagn, and george hales all comming from message boards...!

I never mentioned it on purpose, surely you don't consider the net a bigger medium for introducing people to new producers than word of mouth, clubs, music slaes and the media?

The net IS the main place to find out about tunes. If u went into most record shops, or clubs and asked about trance, people probably wouldnt know much, or be behind. Its maybe the case with other genres, but Lee is a Trance DJ, so they dont matter...!
