    Clubbing...

If we consider several of Liverpool’s positive factors, i.e. long renowned as a clubbing city, with very flexible and almost cosmopolitan ideals, coupled with the regeneration programs that have been initiated, I for one, can see why they won.

Just look at the massive New Year party hosted by Cream, for Liverpool council, a few years ago. Thousands of happy clubbers enjoyed a monumental night of celebration and music from the worlds DJ elite. At no time was football involved in the proceedings.

Who can remember the Bigg Market riots that occur every time a local derby match does not go the Newcastle fans way? I can recall the scenes of hundreds of drunken ‘supporters’ smashing shop windows, phone boxes and taking part in mindless violence in the name of good sportsmanship and football. Very cultural I’m sure.

If a group of rowdy clubbers is seen coming out of a nightclub and the residents complain, you can be sure the police use the full force of the law and requests an audience with the clubs owner or manager as soon as possible.

Do you think the Board of Directors at NUFC was asked to explain the actions of their fans after the last televised riot?

Interchanges, between individuals, add to the ever changing picture of culture in our world. Social interaction promotes and breeds cultural change, leading to future development. I am not suggesting that clubbing is the font of all culture, but it does promote communication and the dissemination of ideas and creativity. This adds to the bubbling cauldron of civilization every second of every day.

Perhaps if the Love Parade had not been quashed due to ‘parking concerns’ or if those who wish to enjoy dance music were not looked down on by the authorities as subversive, things might be different.

New buildings, regeneration and tourist initiatives are culturally barren without a growing population to create a varied and colorful tapestry of change.

We still have licensing laws, from the 1940’s, in place to prevent munitions workers from getting drunk, although across the EEC, these laws have been relaxed to allow greater freedom for pubs and clubs. But in Newcastle, we seem to suffer an almost Draconian attitude towards clubbing; what kind of message would that have sent to the judges on the panel deciding the City of Culture? Oh, we thought Newcastle was applying for European City of Football, not culture!

They say it’s grim up North; I am inclined to agree at times.

    Specifics...

Perhaps my memory is a little rusty Spence, I can only seem to recall mass riots in the Town around Derby matches.

    I am probably wrong though.

    Thanks for the correction!

    :)

Valid points from Lee and The Spense.

We were too over confident, I suppose we just did not see past the keyside.

I despise the victorian drinking laws in our city...it's only lately that a few bars have been granted an extended license...

Derby matches were pitch invasions!! The last being 1990 playoff game @ ST James Park when Sunderland won 2-0.

Dont think that makes the case any better

    Re: Clubbing...

Yeah I agree with you on that.... although newcastle gets "better" all the time supposedly.... its hard to see any actual "culture" other than the latest high brow bar serving 5 pound drinks opening up every other week.

If culture means a load of places to get hammered on drugs (booze this time :) ) - then fair enough we should have won.

But walk through a city like York or London and you see culture.. walk through newcastle and you see northumberland street, and a load of drunken yobs on the streets at night.

I love my city and the people, but in all fairness we aint that cultured apart from the football and drinking which is what we are famous for really. :spangled:

Lets not talk ourselves down here. We did well to get shortlisted when the likes of Canterbury didn't.
And at least that poncey twat in charge of the Oxford bid failed aswell.
