I went to this on Fri, its a canny venue but couldnt help but cringe at the embarrasment of having to move Beyer downstairs and the goings on with the sound etc.

First time i have been to The Attic as well, i cant help but think a Trance night in there will again punish the sound system too like.

Glad you had a good one mate!

Big thanks to everyone who came down! Was quality overall..

Yes there were a couple of unfortunate problems with the sound - this was due to the firealarms being set off and tripping out the saftey switches which in turn kept on knocking the speakers system off....

Not the soundsytem itself which was wicked in full force i thought...

check out a couple of pics.....

I must have been more out of it than i thought at the time in that case...

I thought at the time that he played a track with a fire alarm going off in it and i thought to myself at the time it sounded a decent track.

Little did i know that it was actually the fucking fire alarm, im glad there wasnt a fire or id have been left raving to the alarms and fire engine sirens outside, while trying to find out the name of the track from the firemen

am surprised that not more has been said on here about Adam Beyer last Friday night at the Attic. Whilst not wanting to take anything away from the Lube lads for their booking, it has to be said that there were some fundamental problems that should have been sorted long before any booking of that cost was taken on.

The sound (even working at full capacity) was not a sound system that should have been used for the type of music Beyer plays, it is woefully inadiquate, sounded terrible, kept cutting out and eventually we had to embarrassingly move downstairs to use another dross sound system which then cut out after about 20 minutes. It was here the smoke alarms went off after using the smoke machine for around 3 seconds (not upstairs) which tripped the electrics.

When moving downstairs the bouncers wouldn't let us in as they had closed the room so we had to wait on the stairs. The bouncers were also stopping people from sitting down (which shows they are not the type of bouncers to deal with that type of night at the Venue).

All in all I felt that the venue is just not right for that type of night and because the main lights (yes the chandliers etc) were on all night, it felt like a rave in someone's front room rather than a club I'd just spent a tenner to get in.

I think if the promoters continue to put nights on like this one, the crowd will soon reduce to their mates and those who don't know what a good night consists of...

There were a couple of teething problems with regards to sound on the night.... These were very unfortunate.

Fair point about the lighting in some areas it could have been darker. This point will be addressed.... remember this is a new venue we are working with.

I don’t want to keep banging on about the firealarms stopping the sound etc as im not trying to make excuses.... but that is what happened - but only for a couple of short moments on the night.

Mr Roadrunner you are incorrect about when the fire alarms were started.... it happened once early in the night but kept on tripping itself out.

every system in the land there are going to be problems from time to time.

I will stand by my opinion of the system and I believe that it was spot on when mr firealarm wasn’t pissing about.

Extra soundsystem will be installed for the next LUBE:

The old management from Foundation are starting on monday... big changes are being made.

    Sorry for any inconvenience caused.

Overall it was a fantastic night, place was jumping, wicked atmosphere, top music and good crowd...

When nights like Junior:G, Habit, Freaky were held at the Cosmic Ballroom in its early stages of being refurbished we all suffered problems month in month out with the system or had some sort of issue at some point:

    - The DJ booth was situated in a shite place.
    - The set up was a shambles, the mixer was old & channels were falling off, CDJ's were sticky with drinks having been spilled over them & the sound system used to cut out repeatedly throughout DJ's sets for minutes at a time.

it's only recently the club had the sound system upgraded, DJ booth altered & learned from their previous problems.

We personally suffered a massive drop in numbers when we first started out due to the doormen being 'a little too keen' & we seen at least 10-15 people arrested every event for drugs which had a huge knock on effect the months after. It's only now do they seem to have 'wised up' to the fact that people do get smashed in clubs & dont come out for bother which is why it seems to have sorted itself out these days.

It takes a while for a new Venue to iron out the creases & I think some have been a little too harsh, im sure it will work given time, the line-up's seem spot on.

    Best of Luck lads

Adam beyer good booking - i take my hat off to it

attic - poor venue - end of!!!

at the end of the day there are 2 many promoters covering promotion around the techno / minimal bandwagon latest fashion

this leads to nights that were once were maxed out / full being less than full

so basically youve now got about 4-5 nights all chasing the same cosmic / minimal crowd

so instead of 2-3 great nights full to the brim with electric atmospheres you have 5 nights all with depleted numbers

dont tell me this aint the case, i flyer and attend these events and no matter what is written on the boards re: numbers THIS IS A FACT

theres are too many nights going for the lets book big name dj to pull numbers without working on building the night its reputation from scratch

this is like the roman abramovich guide to club promotion and imho aint sustainable and long term is bad for the local scene

my question is how many of these 'techno' nights will be still running in 12months time?

Thanks man.. youve pointed out all of the things I was thinking but I didnt want to come over as an arsey promoter

Nothing worse than bashing other nights and venues for cheap promotional points etc

Plus I think the Cosmic is a wicked venue and the nights that run there are top.... some people do have short memorys tho

I think its healthy for the scene that so many good nights are starting and more and more wicked artists are coming here now.... and long may it continue...

The set up in the cosmic wasn't the best When Junior G started like, not alot of people complained about it though as everyone knows a new night going to run into certain problems, as learning from mistakes is the best policy. And there was some big names for the first few events like, i mean imagine these lineups in a small venue in the centre of town now!

    May:John Askew
    Shan
    Richard Tulip

    June:John O'Bir
    John O'Callaghan
    Barry Connell

    July:Tylor-Leigh
    Gregg Downey

I can't understand how junior g folded like!

and then i seen come across this photo

    R.I.P Barry

    this is only partially true

wicked artists coming to newcastle is obviously good

but there are too many nights chasing the same genres

its leading to nights that should be pulling 450-500 people and breaking even / turning reinvestable capital only getting numbers of 250ish and not making any return

ultimately this will squeeze some nights out of business, probabaly even some of the ones that were in it for the long haul

one look at the month of may shows there were just too many things to go to.

whilst that choice / selection is good for the punter it is not good for the longevity and sustainability of newcastle underground club scene in general

in may there was 6 things I wanted to go to and i could only affored 2-3 in the end

by end of may i had ran out of clubbing coinage

    Hmm...

Have you even been to the Attic Melt? did you even go inside of Beyer to check out the atmosphere?for you to say it will never work is a little uneducated mate. The cosmic in it's early stages got rinsed & was a shit hole, it's sorted itself out now & people seem to enjoy it, im sure given time the same will happen with the Attic for the lads.
...Lets face it Melt some of your chosen Venues are hardly Clublands 'Most sort after' but if people enjoy it then suppose that what really matters isn't it?

I can see your point of view but whats wrong with a group of like minded people that may never see the light of day playing for the other nights in town throwing a bash of their own? they love the music & want to play in a club?
I think some are a little bitter that the crowd has been split slightly, unlucky! I see it as a bonus given the fact the past 2 years we've seen DJ's grace Newcastle that we would have never had the chance to see if it was left up to just 2 or 3 nights in town.

As for you flyering & attending all these nights well that aint so much of a FACT mate, you weren't at Gershwins the other week for Exhibit A, I've NEVER EVER recently seen you inside or outside any of the Jaunt, Evovle, Habit, Error events to which I've been to? You were no where to be seen at Recycled last week (although had a flyer guy outside at the end). So lets get the FACTS straight here shall we ;)

Yes im sure in a pink & rosey world we'd all love for there to be only 1 night of each genre in a City & have all the pie, but it's never gunna be like that, people are always gunna love music & people are always gunna push what they love, I find it comical that you would come out with something like this to be honest Melt, you rinse Dave Stone & accuse him of having the same sort of attitude/tactics, yet you've just came outright & said it yourself... ?

Tbh nick there wasn't anyone i've actually spoken to mentioned anything about sound problems on friday night, mainly due to the fact that the music and the banter was mint and the atmosphere was mint so that makes a night, regardless of what the venues like. I think because the attic is a different type of venue people are going to need time to get used to it, its not the average type of club setup, with hip hop and rnb been the main type of music being played for the past couple of years the system is going to change for dance music, and i thought it sounded ok on friday, i'm sure with the foundation lads moving in it should be sweet from now on.

So what your saying in a nutshell is that all these smaller/new nights should give up so the older/more established nights can profit more by numbers & revenue?

...your a walking contradiction sometimes Melt:rolleyes:

    fair point

The main thing that people need to consider when setting up a night is if they are actually bringing anything new to the table or theyre just recycling an idea that is already in a place (and better).

e.g. booking people who havent played up here for a while/putting on a slightly different music policy.)

From what I can see most of the newer nights are booking people who aint played up here before/for a while so fair play.

maybe it was no longer necessary to promote good greef tall trees???

i think people overestimate what junior g's role was in newcastle

also when it looked like e:volve was going 2nd week of the month how could junior g ever hope to compete lineup wise.

it would have ended up battered and bruised

the decision to end it was a sound financial one, even tho it probably wasnt losing money

    :)
