the only reason they wanted to land a man on the moon was to work one up the russians. machines can do most of what astronauts can and nobody cares if they crash land. Apollo 13 scared them witless and there was no financial gain to be had from going back again so they just stopped. public interest had waned after the first landings so there was no real PR advantage either.
The technology of the time was shit but just adequate. it was on the very limit of what was possible is all.
to fake it they would have had to keep hunreds of people quiet for 40 years and if they had of been found out they would have lost any value that they got from it. Even the americans aint that daft.

Yes they were pushing the technology of the time to it's limits, which is why stuff like apolo 13 happened. It's worth remembering though that the space shuttles themselves that are still flying are based on designs developed only 3-4 years after the first moon landing, and the first shuttle launch was 7 years after the moon landings, yet they are still being flown today.

Why've they not been back since the Appolo missions? Very simply, they realised there was no economic or military advantage to be gained from continually going to the moon, but there was a hell of a lot of an economic and military advantage to be gained from banging shitloads of satellites into orbit.

Basically by focusing on getting satellites up they were able to set up the GPS system that gave their military a significant advantage over anyone else for decades, plus spy satellites, communications satellites, TV satellites to ensure their TV companies could broadcast the American version of the news and US tv around the world. On the prestige front they moved onto building the space station, plus missions to mars etc.

id love to believe they did and at this moment i still do but its america and i dont trust them one inch wish i was a bairn when they landed tho, what a landmark in human history
