the taliban forced the soviet army to retreat, the veterans are skilled guerilla fighters who can survive quite well in the mountains... and theres plenty of those in afghanistan/pakistan.

The Russians weren't fighting the taliban, they were fighting many mujahideen.

The vietcong were vietnamese - they had nothing to do with the taliban.

Being unfamiliar with a terrain puts a military force at a disadvantage, its not unique to Afghanistan, I need only take your example of Vietnam to demonstrate this... Its got nothing to do with the Taliban being hard to catch and contain - they're a bog standard guerilla force operating in a familiar territory.
