not so, the old ICI works are some of the most enviromentally friendly chemical plants in the world. it's all the ones in china and the old soviet states, and also in some shockingly hypocritical cases even the US that should be worrying us. ;)

i had to go there as part of my a level coursework a few years ago an back then they jus paid the fines for not reaching the required levels of toxins released, cos it'd cost them a lot more if they were to perform the work needed to reduce levels adaquately!

it can be debated from either point of view, you can look at the safety record of the industry as a whole on teesside, or you can highlight individual cases. the point still remains the same and that is, that there are very few safer chemical plants anywhere in the world.

the underlying fact is that teesside is no more polluted than any other urban area in the uk.

it just bugs me how naive people are, and how easily people are led by the negative media portrayal of the area.

i wasn''t saying i thought the area was bad or anything, i jus think its funny how ICI basically said "ah fuck it, wouldn't it just be easier to pay the fines?" and did!

you have to admit their dihydrogen monoxide levels are scarily high tho!

Indeed they will, but it's hardly fair.

While I don't necesarily like the rules of an establishment, I wouldnt not go to it because people smoke it it.

Maybe a solution isnt necessarily to stop people smoking, that won't work, (although it seems to be going down a treat in Dublin), perhaps legislation with regards to a certain standard of ventilation would be a better idea.

One may argue that that would cost more, BUT, I doubt it would cost any more than the revenue lost by smokers not being able to go into bars. (Although I would imagine that if there was an all-out ban, then they wouldn't not go into bars/clubs)

who's it not fair on? smokers given the opportunity to smoke - so we will, wherever we're allowed! Bar staff choose to work in that environment - although i do feel for them - but then it's up to the goverment to outlaw smoking in public places or individual licencees to take the inititive and ban smoking on their premises to protect their staff and other patrons.

i think an outright ban would work to reduce smoking in the UK - i wouldn't be happy about it, at first, but i'd get used to it. at the moment, smoking is allowed, u accept this - so people do!

The thing is, the government spends to much time fannying about, all talk, no action. "We have plans to ban smoking" blah blah blah and sod all is ever done about it.

By not fair, I am referring to the people who smoke who are putting other peoples lives at risk, not just their own.

Compare it to drug use, those who take drugs arn't going to cause any harm to those around them in the same way that smoking does.
