this is the best euromyth I have ever seen. A classic of it's kind.
The tories were responsible for this one in the dying days of the Major government. Nobody else, and certainly not 'Europe'

I just got back from Belgium where trams buses and trains are integrated on a system subsidised by the state like all European systems that work. They had governments which invested in public transport for 40 years whilst we didn't. And now we have the results. You can't have something for nothing and if we want to be able to travel in this country like every other european country we will have to pay for it. Fact

i think public transprt is good, well in newcastle anyway, i buy a weekly bus pass for £9.60, and i can travel as much as i want where ever i want int he newcastle area, which in reality i probably rack up about £30 worth or travel in a week but get it for £9.60.

Plus i can get home and to work in rush hour faster than if i drove because of bus lanes. People just whinge to much imo.

Not everyone works close to where they live, or have as few outgoings as alot of people on here.

I shudder to think how i'd manage if i had a family or a house to pay for - right now alot of us are living the dream of only earning money to pay for our nights out and social lives, and have the advantage of being flexible where we live.

I could easily say the public transport network is great now - especially since i dont use it eh. I just feel sorry for people who HAVE to use it for one reason or another.

I hate buses! the first job I had when I left school was an apprenticeship at washington, I had to get two buses in to work which took me about an hour and a half. Having 3 hours a day added on to your normal 9 hour shift isnt very good at all.

if this statment was true then i wouldn't mind so much but last i heard not even 50% of revenue off taxable road cost's were even put back in to the road network it ended up subsidising public transport and so on , so in return those useing pub trans should pay more to be fair

public transport is horrible. If it was cheaper and easier to use a bus/metro i would.

    Its not, so I dont.

I get in my car, parked on my drive, I can visit this person, that person, nip to uni, back again, give people lifts, go to metrocentre, nip here nip there whenever I want to, go shopping, etc etc, without waiting 20mins for a packed bus in the pouring rain when its dark and windy, when the bus stinks of burning rubber, the people sitting next to me (if im lucky enough to be sitting) have coughs and colds, it doesnt pick me up near enough to my house, it doesnt drop me off exactly where I want to go.

    What is the damn point??

I LOVE driving, even my little corsa is fun - my tunes, my sat nav, my air freshener, my seat covers, my space, my temperature, my comfort.

Bingo - its easy to pontificate on other people about how its 'fair' to pay more tax on x,y,z for the environment/health/wembley but it aint as easy to find a way to cover all the bills, pay the mortgage and feed/educate your children when every extra quid being taken away from you, means another quid you have to take away from you or your family.
