and if you have loads and loads of time on your hands you could read the The Decision To Imprison, for the Prison Reform Trust and the Rethinking Crime and Punishment initiative. :D

i'm currently ploughing through this, and well it certainly puts the future in a very very bleak light, unless we start to seriously tackle the problems within society.

there is a summary available here

Thats a really tough question 2 answer 4 this time in the morning..

I think prisons arent harsh enough anymore.
I know a guy whose a prison guy n if any of the inmates do anything wrong the guards arent even allowed to threaten them with going to solitary or anything as it breaches the inmates' human rights.
I think this breaches the guards human rights as their personal safety is jeopardiesd...if theyre not allowed to threaten the prisoners with anything how can they maintain respect and order?

Another thing...there is massive drug abuse in most prisons

When we're talking of people I know we're talking of people between the ages of 16 - 23... And yes they are petty criminals, they're not hardened murderers they don't rape women, they don't traffic people into the country... They're kids who never had the advantages I've had all my life.. you can't compare a 19 year old car thief to a murderer you complete numpty - one is petty crime the other is serious.

I also know locking this kid up and throwing away the key isn't going to rehabilitate him... I can't begin to think how your brain works.

Jesus christ - I really don't like argueing with you - its like holding a debate with forest gump.

the crimes you mention may be petty compared to murder or rape but why should we condone it.....i know ppl who haven't had all the advantages i had but they don't go out stealing!!

your the one who's compared theiving to murder.....i never mentioned the latter......

the reason that you feel like your debating with forrest gump is cos your arguuing with yourself joe...i ain't arguing with you.... :D

I totally agree with Joe, everything he has said is spot on. Perhaps different peoples circumstances reflect how they would deal with these situations. I was brought up in a lovely little posh area that no1 ever visited. There was always crime though, burglaries, car thefts, flashing etc. I lived in the bubble of telling the police whenever anything happened to us, however i moved to Winlaton in 2001 and i was left to fend for myself. And it is horrible up here! The crime is phenominal. U dont tell the police about stuff u get on with it and deal with it urself most of the time! U have to otherwise nowt will get done! AND most importantly U KEEP UR NOSE OUT OF OTHER PEOPLES BUSINESS!!!!

I was at the first Max Power one in my car, the one where the bloke streeked and was caught on CCTV and the police were after him - see even the police are struggling to find stuff to do the boy racers for! It was crap though!!!! The ones in Teeside park are usually a lot better. But then how do u know whether a cruise is good or not? I hate all the burn out shit n that crap stuff, pink cars with big silly spoilers and charva tunes emerging from their boom boxes! I just like racing!

it's a good article that, makes u realise some of the blame for the reason why prisons aren't working is that the goverment is failing to properly fund and support them. Prison can sometimes be the only solution, but it's got to be a well run institution, free from trouble with cash and over crowding for it to work.
