For those that think dogs can't smell it if it is in an airtight container - think again. There will be traces on the outside of the container from your hands when you put it in, which is enough for the dogs to smell. And washing it won't necessarily work either.

dogs are trained to smell "substantial" amounts of drugs and not "trace" amounts.

Could you imagine how unworkable a dog would be in raiding a smack house that has trace elements of drugs covering every square meter of the house? they dog would be overwheled by positive smells and therefore would not be able to find any actual drugs.

I heard that the dogs are only useful for about 20 minutes at a time. That would suggest that it's all scare-tactics the majority of the time.

Two of my mates got off the train at Newcastle Central, had smoked a joint about two hours prior to this, and the police roaming the station (it was a match day) approached them with two dogs, which promtly sat down next to them, which they are trained to do when the pick up a "scent". Because the police found nothing when searching their pockets they took them to the station to check. These dogs prob wouldn't be used in big raid because of the fact they can pick up trace amounts but are used, in London mostly, to pick up small amounts carried by clubbers.
