Do you not think it's more a case of that he simply cares? he had the chance to go to ManU in 96 & have the potential to win just about everything, he stayed with this bunch of shit through thick & thin, it's his Club & home City but id never expect any football fan outside of Newcastle to understand this

He's seen us in a very worrying position (moreso than ever) & acted, granted he has no actual 'management' experience but he's been a captain all his career, both Club & Country, he'll know how to manage players. He knows Newcastle inside out, has the respect any manager would want from a squad of players & has every single one of the fans on his side... something which the hierarchy have slowly strangled out of everyone over the past 12 months.
