they are pretty essential now i think. If you plan to work for a company.

Although my dad hasnt got ANY qualifications, and he earns 100k+. But that due to experience, which is difficultto get noew if you havent got any qualifications!

I do BA Geography at Northumbria, and I think in all fairness the course is a bit of a joke. For the amount you pay and the reputaion which degrees have, you should be learning a lot of stuff.

In reality though, you learn very little. I think that gaining a degree is simply a test of your overall intelligence as opposed to a massive learning experience.

I'm with Revel. I'm looking to start my own business. I don't see any satisfaction resulting from a job I get because I'll have a degree. I want to create employment and feel like I'm playing my part. I've not got the type of personality that takes kindly to reporting to nobheads and licking arses everyday. I wouldn't care if I wasn't earning the earth through it, just so long as I think I'm doing something fulfilling.

Uni is a defo for those seeking to become professionals. I've many friends who have benefitted from Uni.

I'm at Uni now but actually work full time. I'm well ahead on my work just through reading the required texts and making sure I do follow up research etc. I can do all of this and not pay the yearly fees or get the degree. Something I'm certainly considering.

May be true for the Wearmouth Campus, thats just shit, alot of the degrees arn't even honours degrees.

Bt St. Peter's has had very good ratings from professional bodies such as Ofsted. They gave the computing school over 90%!!

A computing degree with Cisco certification is better than just a computing degree! And I didn't go to Northumbria because Sunderland's facilities are better, and the course that appealed to me the most was at Sunderland. Didn't apply for Newcastle, was just saying my grades were good enough to go if I had so chosen.

Never heard anything about these "rumors" like! I think i'll listen to OFSTED, and the Daily Telegraph...... probs a more reliable source :p

the uni you went to is one of the most important things about your degree - you said you could have got into newcastle before - do you seriously think a degree from sunderland is worth more than one from newcastle??

if you do its no suprise your at sunderland :D

all this 'its better for my course' crap only counts if the uni has a half decent reputation in the first place or is a specialised college - like loughborough...

yip, thats pretty much how i feel bout workin, especially workin sales. i begrudge goin to work, workin my arse off to sell a product or company in order to make sum1 else filthy rich. work for yourself and whateva money comes in from the work u do is yours.

i still think degrees etc are important, but if u can succeed without why waste the time?

I did a college course in Business and really considered going to Uni but looked at all options....and the other option was to work and do my degree part time as a day release yeah it takes longer but IM earning a good wage and I am getting experience while doing it.

The worst thing I have found with our company is tehy are all for taking on students that have their degrees but at teh end of the day they have no hands on experience everyhting they haev ever done has been on paper! And they have never handled the situation before! Thats when they struggle but i know peep ahev to start fo some place but I guess its jus really hard!

And the point is though mate, that Sunderland DOES have a very good reputation for its School of Computing!

You end up more qualified due to the Cisco content. At the end of the day, Cisco is Cisco wherever you do it....so it counts more, especialy since I want to go into networking.

I would say I have a much greater chance of getting a job in a professional networking field with a degree in Network Computing, plus the Cisco Certification, than I would have with a non-networking computing degree and no Cisco from Newcastle. Newcastle hardly has an acclaimed computing department, most of the computing degrees involvle another subject such as Maths or Physics, which does not appeal to me. And that degree, from Sunderland, is definatley gonna be worth more to me than a shitter one from newcastle that leaves me less qualified for what I want to do....

Just as a matter of interest......... is there any reason why you are putting me down?
