Thats the problem we have today - Some people believe that by virtue of the fact they were lucky enough to become part of society merely by virtue of being born here ...that they are somehow entitled to more than just the bare essentials.

which raises the question - what do you owe other people?

seems like we are all living in a society where the prevailing ethic is that we don't owe anybody else anything and its everyone for themselves.

I'm more than happy to pay taxes towards those who either cannot work or are temporarily out of work, for the NHS, for services that I may not use but that benefit society as a whole etc. What I object to is paying for those who, whilst perfectly able, are not willing to give anything back to the society that is supporting them.

In non-material terms, I owe people the respect and freedom from prejudice that I expect in return.

Exactly... on the other side of things, you'll always have people who take more than they are 'entitled' to since peoples opinions of whats fair are entirely different.

I grew up with, and know people who know exactly what they can get off the state in return for doing ABSOLUTELY nothing and continue to do so. I have no issue with them because they are only taking what they can get .... its human nature eh.

The problem with the overly PC, nanny state we have now is that the past decade has convinced alot of people that their entitlements now stretch to state provided SKY TV, money for fags, holidays and christmas presents, and a career on pop idol.

(And before anyone brands me a tory boy - I've recently converted to anti government anarchist. So neh neh)

I do have an issue with people like this. Just because you can, doesn't mean you should. I couldn't do it and have a clear conscience.

except you don't respect those whose lifestyle you disagree with ie scroungers.
there are still people who disagree with and disrespect your lifestyle. How to decide what's right ?

in Victorian days there was the notion of the deserving and the undeserving poor. We seems to be heading back to that now. It led to the horrors of the workhouse.
The papers love it. scroungers stories appear every day. meanwhile the people who run those papers avoid paying any tax at all. The Murdoch press (Sun, news of the world, times, sky TV) pay next to no tax at all. Just getting them to cough up would recoup twice what is scrounged by benefit claimers.

I respect their right not to do anything constructive, that's fine, I just object to paying for it.

Fortunately there are actually very few scroungers; very rich tax dodgers cost the economy more. So while I object to paying for someone to sit on their arse, fortunately it doesn't cost me much.

it is depressing that the debate always centres around scroungers though as if they were the reason for high taxes.
one weeks war in iraq could have paid for the scroungers for a month.
or the cost of Trident for ten years

I think we should share what we have with people less fortunate than us (and that includes asylum seekers and economic migrants) but I need the government to organise that cos i'm too selfish to do it left to my own devices.
I think we deserve as much respect as we give.

yes but it's interesting to know how you think it's meant to be.
do you think you are entitled to a good shag for instance?

I just went to the hospital and parked using my mothers disabled car pass thus defrauding the NHS of money.
so I obviously believe I'm entitled to free hospital parking

Its easy to say that, if you take your point of reference way back in the past and compare then to now.

.... Compare to say... 10 years ago, thats the bit im having a very hard time being positive about.

i dont think were are 'entitled' to anything personally.

i think thanks to a relatively fair government a lot of people are eligible for a lot of handouts that help to make life fairer, although this is highly abused.

I am not sure what your on about. But I read further up you & others discussing the layabouts getting cash & yes it is a nice topic to discuss & emotions run high when people talk about it, but overall I dont really care about these people or asylum seekers raping the system as in most cases this money is pumped back into the UK economy.

I like that being born in this country that "ENTITLES" me to have armed forces that ensure I will never get large scale warfare on my doorstep. An education system open to all & if you embrace it you can go far in life. A medical system that I or my family have always had great & QUICK care from. A benefits & pension system that means the millions of needy people will get something & only handful take advantage of.
