yeh sometimes you get thrown out at 2am still twanging like a guitar string and no afters to be found and have to sit in a taxi trying not to talk gibberish, and sometimes you are asleep in a corner with a taxi booked for an hours time and feeling like a plucked turkey. ha

Really wasn't in the mood for it to be honest. Blame the Thursday night. Made me knackered for the rest of the weekend. Had a great night at the Comedy Store though. Highly recommend it!

Any good DJ would know what the crowd expected of them before walking into the club and could prepare/practice there set accordingly, knowing at what point in the set to to play a certain track.

I practice all my sets whatever the gig to make sure it flows and each track blends in with the next. Its never done my any harm I always take extra records and wallop them in if need be.

An advantage of this - after your set you dont sit down and think "shite, I forgot to play such n such".

I guess Im stil just a bedroom Dj then....

I think that its hilarious that djs practice there sets.

Yeah ya need to go through ya tracks before a gig to get ya box together and include a decent variety, but a GOOD dj doesnt practice there set from start to finish and then play that out. How do ya know is there crowd will react or not? its ridiculous it really is.

Most of us have been arguing at cross purposes - those that said practice is good didn't mean practising entire sets, just practising in general, to get to know new records and to maintain/learn new skills.

As I said, it's all down to semantics.

Yeah i agree practice does make perfect, but theres a difference between buying and getting to know new tracks and planning part of a set like some djs clearly do. :)

Because a GOOD DJ will know how the crowd will react all through there set and therefore will know in what order to put there records in.

I dunno what style your into but I guess if its trance or house/prog etc its all around the same tempo ? My sets can range from 130 BPM - 170 BPM (oldksool), 170 - 400 gabba, so I find it easier to plan a set out so it flows and people dont notie the tempo changing that much.

I've been doing this for 12 years now and have international bookings almost every week, playing in front of anything from 100 - 25,000 people, so I think I know what IM doing !

..i think there is 2 types of pratice people are talking about here, these could be ----

'youve got a 1hr set to play'...so dj goes home, works out a 'perfect' 1hr mix then plays that and only that...

    or

practicing what goes with what, and having an idea of what you are going to play is good...but not running by a timetable

I practice the mix of the first 2 tracks cos once that is nailed your confidence is soaring and its a walk in the park

sometimes i have a fair idea of what i may play last 2.

but hey what do i know

i play in the uk less than sasha

heres a formula for a good and successful dj

successful dj = ( good deck skills + likeable chap with lots of mates + good in social situations and hangs out on scene + owns lots of good tracks no one else has ) x element of being in right place at right time

It is all about your first mix like, whether thats out in a club or venue or when ya making a CD.

Generally if you totally de-rail a train then its down from there cos ya confidence is just shot to pieces.

hence the reason to practice the fuck out of the first 2 records

and alwasy carryb a killer choon to slap on if youve totally lost the dancefloor

people who practise every last bit of the whole thing are not interacting with the crowd as much musically, imo
