brits is short for great britons and paki is short for pakistan yet one is ok to say and the other is not

No because "paki" is used in racist context and found offensive to people. You do not know they are from pakistan because of their colour...its like called an english person a scot or welsh or something.

I still don't think the use of the word should be classed as racism! it should be how the word is used, the same goes for 'Brit'.

Whether or not the word itself has negative connoitations and a a history it still shouldn't make the user of this word a racist!!!!
